Living Well After Work — The Project Human Story

I spent much of my working life hurling perfectly respectable people through the skies at 600 miles an hour whilst they deliberated between beef or chicken somewhere over Greenland in mild turbulence.

It was, on balance, a tremendous adventure.

Exhausting at times, occasionally chaotic, and far less glamorous at Oh My Goodness in the morning than the job description would have you believe. But flying beautiful machines to distant places, experiencing different cultures, and briefly escaping the British winter for sunshine and a decent cup of coffee meant that most pilots would quietly agree it was worth every unsociable hour.

And then, one day, the cockpit door closes behind you for the last time.

There is suddenly rather a lot of time to notice the world.

And to wonder what the next adventure might be.

I was fairly certain this wasn’t going to mean easing into a life of corduroy trousers and strong opinions about hydrangeas.

That’s gardening. Entirely different thing.

The same applies to golf.

Both will no doubt find their way into my life eventually, but I doubt either is the answer to quite an important question:

What does living well actually look like once work stops organising your life?

Project Human is my exploration of that question.

Part living notebook, part slow adventure — a place for thoughts on wellbeing, healthy ageing, purpose after work, good food, a decent cup of tea, and the small pleasures that somehow matter most.

There will probably be some large adventures along the way too.

Like all the best expeditions, I expect the journey to meander.

That’s not a flaw in the plan.

That is the plan.

If that sounds like your kind of expedition, you are welcome aboard.
